Potassium Carbonate
Chemical formula: K2CO3
Relative molecular weight: 138.206
CAS NO: 584-08-7
Property: The appearance is colorless crystal or white particle, which is very soluble in water, and the solution is strongly alkaline. Insoluble in ethanol, acetone and ether. It is highly hygroscopic and can absorb carbon dioxide and water when exposed to the air, which can be converted into potassium bicarbonate. It can be obtained by reacting potassium hydroxide with carbon dioxide. It can also be obtained by co-heating potassium chloride with magnesium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide under pressure, or by soaking tung seed ash and plant ash.
Applications: Potassium Carbonate is mainly used for synthesis gas decarburization, electronic tube, glass, enamel, printing and dyeing, welding electrode, film development, inorganic salts and raw materials of the glass shell of the display tube. The impure potassium carbonate is commonly known as oxaline, tung alkali, or pearl ash, and is one of the early varieties of potassium fertilizer.
