Properties

Potassium cyanide, commonly known as Shane potassium, is the potassium salt of hydrogen cyanide. In general environment, potassium cyanide is a colorless or white solid with almond flavor, similar in appearance to sugar and soluble in water. Although highly toxic, it is one of the few substances that can form soluble compounds with the element gold, so it is often used for gold plating and polishing of jewelry. It is also sometimes used in gold mining by chemical extraction (although sodium cyanide is more commonly used) and was occasionally used as a rat poison until the 1970s.
