Tebipenem pivoxil is the first penem drug used in the treatment of drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae infection, including persistent otitis media and bacterial pneumonia. The inhibitory activity of tibipenem ester against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Legionella pneumoniae is used in the treatment of ear, nose, throat and upper respiratory tract infections in pediatric patients.

Tebipenem pivoxil is the precursor of tibipenem. After oral administration, it is hydrolyzed by esterase to release the parent drug tibipenem. It binds with bacterial penicillin binding protein (PBP) and inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. It is an oral carbapenem antibiotic.
