Purpose: Ethyl (S)-3-cyano-5-methylhexanoate can be used to synthesize pregabalin, which is a new type of v-amino acid (GABA) receptor antagonist developed by Pfizer. It was first approved to be marketed in the UK in July 2004 for the treatment of partial incomplete epilepsy in adult patients.
