Gemcitabine hydrochloride is a synthetic new type of two fluoronucleoside antitumor drug developed by Eli Lilly. It was approved in 1995 in South Africa, Sweden, Holland, Australia and other countries. In 1996, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first line treatment for non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer. Gemcitabine hydrochloride, a nucleoside homologue, is a cell cycle specific antitumor drug. It mainly kills cells in S phase (DNA synthesis) and blocks the transition of cell proliferation from G1 to S phase.
