nature:
Unstable in air, heated and oxidized to produce sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrite and ammonia. 400 starts to decompose and 500-600 decomposes rapidly. It has deliquescence and reacts violently with water to produce ammonia and sodium hydroxide. Decompose in hot alcohol. It is heated to 300330 in vacuum and decomposed into nitrogen, sodium, hydrogen and ammonia. Flammable and explosive. Corrosive.
Purpose:
· It is used as condensation promoter in organic chemical reaction. It is the raw material for synthesizing vitamin A. It is also used as dehydrating agent, dehalogenating agent, alkylating agent and ammoniating agent. Dissociation of NHF ions in liquid ammonia was used as initiator for anionic polymerization to produce polyvinyl chloride. It is also used in the manufacture of azide compounds, cyanide, indigo and hydrazine.
· It is used for making sodium cyanide, organic synthesis and drug manufacturing
· It is often used as condensation accelerator and dehydrating agent in organic synthesis.
