Protocatechuic acid (PCA), namely 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, is a relatively simple water-soluble phenolic acid, which is a precursor for the synthesis of other complex molecules, such as anthocyanin 3-O-β-D-glucoside and vanillin. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid is found in edible vegetables, fruits, nuts, brown rice, pecans, tea, hibiscus flowers and some Chinese herbal medicines. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid is also an effective component of compound preparations such as compound salvia miltiorrhiza injection and Guanxinning injection. Extensive studies have shown that protocatechuic acid has many physiological activities such as anti-platelet aggregation, reducing myocardial oxygen consumption, bacteriostasis, analgesia, etc. It has clinical application values such as expectorant, antiasthmatic, and treatment of chronic tracheitis.
