Isooctane is a standard material for the determination of the antiknock performance of gasoline. The octane number of isooctane and heptane is defined as 100 and 0 respectively. If the antiknock performance of gasoline sample is equivalent to that of a certain component of isooctane heptane mixture under the specified test conditions, the octane number of gasoline sample is equal to the volume percentage of isoisoisoalkane in the standard fuel. The octane number of gasoline with good antiknock performance is high. In the aspect of organic synthesis, isooctane is a kind of non-polar inert solvent, and it is also used as a reference sample of solvent and gas chromatography. Isooctane is mainly produced by petroleum refining in industry, and can also be prepared by synthetic method. For example, isobutane reacts with isobutylene in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. Isooctane can be prepared by-product of 264 antioxidant and isobutylene polymer by distillation and hydrogenation.
