DBU can be isolated from a sponge called niphates digitalis and is therefore also considered an alkaloid. DBU can be used as curing agent of epoxy resin; It can also be used as a protective agent in the synthesis of cephalosporin; DBU is also used in the purification of fullerene-c60 (DBU reacts with fullerenes with C70 or more carbon numbers, but does not interact with C60); DBU was also used as catalyst in the synthesis of polyurethane. DBU is also used as a catalyst in the reaction of alicyclic and aliphatic isocyanates.
