It is a white crystalline powder at low temperature. Odorless, sour, soluble in water and ethanol, insoluble in chloroform. Density 1.096, melting point 5-6°C, boiling point 127°C (13mmHg), refractive index 1.5675-1.5695, flash point 130°C, water-soluble insoluble. It is used in the synthesis and preparation of various chiral food additives and nutritional additives. Such as the separation process of new functional nutritional additive L-carnitine and some chiral drugs. It is also used in beverages, candies, bread, and gelatin as sour agents, biochemical reagents, racemate splitting agents, and pharmaceutical splitting agents. It is also used in photography, canning, printing and dyeing, pottery industry and the preparation of other resolving agents and salts, esters, pharmaceutical intermediates, etc. It is also an intermediate for various drugs (contraceptives, rodenticides), and is also used as a solvent and plastic softener.
