Brief Introduction
Fluorene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with white flake crystal. It has fluorescence when impure, and has a characteristic aromatic smell similar to naphthalene. It is found in the high boiling components of automobile exhaust, corn whisker and coal tar. Combustible. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, ethanol and ether. Fluorene can be synthesized in industry and used as precursor of dye, plastics and insecticide. It can be used to synthesize 9-fluorenone, 9-fluorenol and trinitrofluorenone. Polyfluorene can be used as a light emitter in organic light emitting diodes. The 9-position proton of fluorene is acidic with pKa of 22.6 (DMSO), which can be removed by alkali (such as sodium hydroxide) to form orange yellow aromatic anion. The anion can be used as a nucleophilic reagent to replace the electrophilic reagent at 9-position. Fluorene derivative 9-fluorenyl methyl chloroformate (Fmoc CL) is used to give fluorene methoxycarbonyl protection to amino groups in peptide synthesis.
