Trioctyl citrate is a widely used non-toxic plasticizer. It has excellent cold resistance, light resistance and water resistance. It can be used as plasticizer for polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and various cellulose resins. It has the advantages of good compatibility, high plasticization efficiency, non toxicity and low volatility. It has excellent rotatory light resistance and water resistance; It can also be used in food packaging, medical and health products and children's toys, and can replace phthalate plasticizers with carcinogenic effect; In addition, it can also be used as defoamer for protein solutions. Trioctyl citrate is usually obtained by esterification of citric acid and industrial octanol (2-ethylhexanol) under the action of catalyst and water carrying agent, and then refined to industrial products. Sulfuric acid under vacuum is often used as catalyst in classical processes, and non sulfuric acid catalyst under atmospheric pressure is mostly used in new processes. The commonly used non acid catalysts are titanate and organotin. The water carrying agent here is usually industrial octanol itself. The reaction temperature is generally about 220 ℃.
