Description of ethylene oxide gas
Ethylene oxide is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2H4O. It is a toxic carcinogen. It was previously used to make fungicides. Ethylene oxide is flammable and explosive, so it is not easy to transport long distance, so it has strong regional characteristics. It is widely used in washing, pharmaceutical, printing and dyeing industries. It can be used as the initiator of detergent in chemical industry.
On october27,2017, the list of carcinogens published by the international agency for research on cancer of the World Health Organization was preliminarily sorted out for reference. Ethylene oxide was included in the list of class I carcinogens.
Ethylene oxide (EO) is one of the simplest cyclic ethers, which belongs to heterocyclic compounds and is an important petrochemical product. Ethylene oxide is a colorless transparent liquid at low temperature and a colorless gas with ether pungent odor at normal temperature. The vapor pressure of gas [2] is high, which can reach 141kpa at 30 ℃. This high vapor pressure determines that ethylene oxide has strong penetration during fumigation and disinfection.
Ethylene oxide is the second generation of chemical disinfectant after formaldehyde. It is still one of the best cold disinfectants. It is also an important member of the four major low-temperature sterilization technologies (low-temperature plasma, low-temperature formaldehyde steam, ethylene oxide and glutaraldehyde). EO is a simple epoxy compound, which is a non-specific alkyl compound with the molecular formula of C2H4O,
The structural formula is - CH2 - CH2 - O -, and the molecular weight is 44.05.
Main uses of ethylene oxide
1. Ethylene oxide has bactericidal effect, does not corrode metals, has no residual odor, and can kill bacteria (and its internal spores), molds and fungi. Therefore, it can be used as a gas bactericide to disinfect some articles and materials that cannot withstand high temperature disinfection.
2. Manufacturing other solvents (such as fiber dissolving agents), diluents, non-ionic surfactants, synthetic detergents, antifreezes, disinfectants, toughening agents and plasticizers.
3. Ethylene oxide can generate huge energy during automatic decomposition and can be used as the power of rockets and jet thrusters. Generally, the mixture of nitromethane and ethylene oxide (60:40-95:5) is used. The mixed fuel has good combustion performance, low freezing point, stable properties and is not easy to ignite.
4. Ethylene oxide is mainly used in the manufacture of ethylene glycol (raw material for polyester fiber), synthetic detergent, non-ionic surfactant, antifreeze, emulsifier and ethylene glycol products. It is also used in the production of plasticizers, lubricants, rubber and plastics.
