Gas description
Carbon dioxide, a kind of carbon oxide compound, with the chemical formula of CO2 and the quantity of the chemical formula of 44.0095, is a colorless, odorless or colorless gas with slight sour taste under normal temperature and pressure. It is also a common greenhouse gas and a component of the air (accounting for 0.03%-0.04% of the total volume of the atmosphere). In terms of physical properties, the melting point of carbon dioxide is -78.5 ℃, the boiling point is -56.6 ℃, the density is higher than that of air (under standard conditions), and it is soluble in water. In terms of chemical properties, carbon dioxide has inactive chemical properties, high thermal stability (only 1.8% decomposition at 2000 ℃), can not burn, and generally does not support combustion. It belongs to acid oxide, which has the generality of acid oxide. Because it reacts with water to form carbonic acid, it is carbonic anhydride.
Carbon dioxide can generally be prepared by calcining limestone at high temperature or reacting limestone with dilute hydrochloric acid. It is mainly used to refrigerate perishable food (solid), as a refrigerant (liquid), to manufacture carbonated soft drinks (gaseous) and as a solvent for homogeneous reaction (supercritical state). As for its toxicity, studies have shown that low concentration of carbon dioxide is not toxic, while high concentration of carbon dioxide will poison animals.
Main applications
High purity carbon dioxide is mainly used in the electronics industry, medical research and clinical diagnosis, carbon dioxide lasers, calibration gas of detection instruments, and preparation of other special mixed gas. It is also used as a regulator in polyethylene polymerization.
Solid carbon dioxide is widely used in refrigerated dairy products, meat, frozen food and other perishable foods in transit. It is used as a refrigerant in many industrial processes, such as crushing heat sensitive materials, rubber polishing, metal cold treatment, shrinkage assembly of mechanical parts, vacuum cold trap, etc.
Gaseous carbon dioxide is used for carbonating soft drinks, pH control of water treatment process, chemical processing, food preservation, inert protection during chemical and food processing, welding gas, plant growth stimulant, hardening mold and core in casting and pneumatic devices, It is also used as a diluent for bactericidal gas (that is, the mixed gas of ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide is used as a bactericidal, insecticide and fumigant. It is widely used in the sterilization of medical appliances, packaging materials, clothing, fur, bedding, bone powder disinfection, and the fumigation of warehouses, factories, cultural relics and books).
Liquid carbon dioxide is used as refrigerant, low temperature test of aircraft, missiles and electronic components, improving oil well recovery, rubber polishing and controlling chemical reaction. It can also be used as fire extinguishing agent.
Supercritical carbon dioxide can be used as a solvent to dissolve non-polar, non-ionic and low molecular weight compounds, so it is widely used in homogeneous reactions.
