Propionic acid is widely used. It can be used in the food industry to produce preservatives such as calcium propionate and sodium propionate. It can also be used to produce propionate flavors and fragrances. Propionic acid is also an important chemical raw material, which can be used for the determination of aromatic diamines, as esterification agent, cellulose propionate, food flavor and as a gas chromatography reference sample. Propionic acid is also an important raw material for glucose synthesis, and is the main raw material for the synthesis of glucose and lactose in ruminant livestock.
