Brief Introduction

Calcium folinate is white to yellowish crystalline or amorphous powder, odorless, soluble in water, almost insoluble in ethanol or ether, and soluble in 0.1mol/l sodium hydroxide solution. It is a derivative of folic acid. Folic acid is a vitamin needed for DNA synthesis, DNA repair and DNA methylation. It also acts as a cofactor in biological reactions involving folic acid. Studies have shown that calcium folinate is partially effective in treating children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Calcium folinate is mainly used as the antidote of folic acid antagonists (such as methotrexate, pyrimidine or trimethoprim). It is used to prevent the serious toxic effects caused by excessive or large dose of methotrexate, megaloblastic anemia caused by folic acid deficiency. When combined with fluorouracil, it is used in the treatment of advanced colon cancer and rectal cancer.
