Hexamethylenetet is colorless or white crystal, odorless, soluble in water, alcohol and chloroform, irritating to the skin, easy to sublimate and decompose when heated, flammable, easy to dissolve in water, difficult to dissolve in ether, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. Hexamethylenetet has adamantane structure, high symmetry and tertiary amine properties. Each of the four nitrogen atoms has a pair of non shared electrons, which can form coordination compounds with many inorganic compounds. As a preservative, hexamethylenetet is widely used in national defense medicine, rubber, plastic, chemical, food and other industries. It can be used as anti shrinking finishing agent, sodium chlorite bleaching activator, buffer of waterproof agent CR, etc. It is also used as curing agent of resin and plastic, vulcanization accelerator of rubber, and bactericide. When it is used as medicine, it will decompose to produce formaldehyde in case of acid urine after oral administration, so it has bactericidal effect and is used for mild urinary tract infection. Its external use includes treatment of tinea, antiperspiration and bromhidrosis. Mixed with caustic soda and sodium phenolate, it is used as phosgene absorbent for gas mask. Hexamethylenetet is also a common corrosion inhibitor, which is used to slow down the corrosion of metal materials.
