English Name: cyclopropane
Chemical formula: C3H6
Molecular weight: 42.08
CAS login No.: 75-19-4
Properties: colorless gas with petroleum ether like smell.
Introduction to cyclopropane gas
Colorless flammable gas. It smells of petroleum ether. The relative density is 0.720 (-79/4 ℃). It weighs 1.879g/l under standard conditions. Melting point -126.6 ℃. Boiling point -33 ℃. It can be liquefied at 0.4~0.6 MPa (4~6 atmospheric pressure). Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ether, ethanol and other organic solvents. Form explosive mixture with air, with explosion limit of 2.4%~10.3% (volume).
Storage method of cyclopropane
Storage precautions: store in a cool and ventilated warehouse dedicated to flammable gas. Keep away from fire and heat source. The storage temperature should not exceed 30 ℃. It shall be stored separately from oxidant and halogen, and mixed storage shall not be allowed. Explosion proof lighting and ventilation facilities shall be adopted. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that are easy to produce sparks. The storage area shall be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment.
Cyclopropane application
It is used in organic synthesis in industry and as an anesthetic in medicine.
Precautions for cyclopropane
Hazard overview
Health hazard: it has anesthetic effect. When the animal inhales more than a certain concentration, the blood pressure drops, resulting in respiratory paralysis and death. In industrial production and use, the product generally has no obvious harm to human body. It is the first foreign case that a young man died in a warehouse due to inhalation of cyclopropane. Autopsy showed pulmonary hyperemia, hemorrhagic edema, tracheal hyperemia, and cell autolysis earlier.
Explosion hazard: the product is flammable.
First aid measures
Inhalation: quickly leave the site to a place with fresh air. Keep respiratory tract unobstructed. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops, give artificial respiration immediately. Seek medical attention.
Fire fighting measures
Harmful combustion products: carbon monoxide. Fire extinguishing method: cut off the gas source. If the air source cannot be cut off, it is not allowed to extinguish the flame at the leakage. Spray water to cool the container, and move the container from the fire site to an open place if possible.
Extinguishing agent: mist water, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder.
Leakage emergency treatment
Emergency treatment: evacuate the personnel in the leakage pollution area to the windward quickly, isolate them and strictly restrict their access. Cut off the fire source. It is recommended that emergency treatment personnel wear self-contained positive pressure respirators and anti-static work clothes. Cut off the source of leakage as far as possible. Cover the sewer near the leakage point with industrial covering or adsorption / absorbent to prevent gas from entering. Reasonable ventilation to accelerate diffusion. If there is no danger, it shall be burned locally, and the surrounding area shall be cooled by spray water to prevent other combustibles from catching fire. Or move the leaking container to an open place and pay attention to ventilation. Gas leakage containers shall be properly handled and reused after repair and inspection.
Handling and storage
Operating precautions: airtight operation and full ventilation. Operators must receive special training and strictly abide by the operating procedures. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation system and equipment. Prevent gas leakage into the air of the workplace. Avoid contact with oxidants and halogens. During transportation, the steel cylinder and container must be grounded and jumpered to prevent static electricity. Handle with care to prevent damage to the package and container. Fire fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment of corresponding varieties and quantities shall be provided.
Storage precautions: store in a cool and ventilated warehouse.
Cycloalkanes exist in petroleum and are components of petroleum products. Common cycloalkanes include: cyclopropane, cyclobutane, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, naphthane, cycloalkanes contained in liquid fuels and solvents, with small molecular weight, while lubricants contain large molecular weight. They are also used as raw materials and solvents in chemical production. Cycloolefins are by-products of petrochemical industry and coal coke industry, and are used as chemical raw materials. The alicyclic hydrocarbons contained in plants are called terpenes (some terpenes are open chain hydrocarbons). The terpene mixture commonly used in industry is turpentine. Most of these compounds are flammable liquids, and their vapor can reach explosive concentration in normal temperature air.
