Brief Introduction
Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal antibiotic isolated from the culture medium of Streptomyces. Its antibacterial mechanism is that amphotericin B can combine with ergosterol on the fungal cell membrane, resulting in the damage of cell membrane, the improvement of permeability, and the escape of intracellular substances and death. Bacteria have no ergosterol on their cell membrane, so they are ineffective. The effective blood concentration can be maintained for more than 24 hours after intravenous drip. It is not easy to pass through the blood-brain barrier. Amphotericin B is effective to almost all fungi. Drug resistant strains are rare and its price is low, which makes it still show high practical value in clinical application for more than 40 years. However, due to its obvious nephrotoxicity and infusion related toxicity (such as fever, shivering, nausea, etc.), the popularization and Application of amphotericin B is greatly limited.
